FAQ

What’s the relationship between the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) and The Illinois Council on Family Relations (ILCFR)?

ILCFR is an affiliate of NCFR. NCFR has state affiliates across the country, and ILCFR is the Illinois affiliate.

If I am a member of NCFR, how do I become a member of ILCFR?

If you are a member of NCFR, you are automatically a member of ILCFR. NCFR sends the ILCFR membership chair a report on a regular basis of all members of NCFR that are from Illinois. When members of the ILCFR Executive committee send out emails to members, this would include all members of NCFR from Illinois. If you are a member of NCFR, but are not receiving emails, please contact Lynda Bessey from NCFR for details as to why this might be.

Can I become a member of ILCFR if I am not a member of NCFR?

ILCFR has a brochure that you fill out and mail to the current membership chairperson. Click here for the form and more information about becoming a member of ILCFR.

How can I get more involved in ILCFR?

ILCFR has many opportunities for students and professionals to get involved. You could volunteer at our annual conference or attend one of our meetings as a guest member for starters. If you would like more information, contact the current president of ILCFR. For information on who the current officers, click here.

Can students get involved and even become members of the ILCFR Executive Board?

Absolutely! We welcome student involvement on a variety of levels. Please contact the current president of ILCFR and tell them you are interested in becoming more involved! We will try to place you in a role that fits your strengths and interests.

What is family life education?

Duncan and Goddard (2011) define outreach family life education (FLE) “as any educational activity occurring outside a traditional school classroom setting, usually involving adults, that is designed to strengthen relationships in the home and foster positive individual, couple, and family development” (p.4). See the NCFR website for more information about FLE.

What is a Certified Family Life Educator?

National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) provides certification for the profession of family life education. Becoming a CFLE means that you have a proven background and understanding in each of the ten family life content areas (individuals and families in societal contexts, internal dynamics of families, human growth and development across the lifespan, human sexuality, interpersonal relationships, family resource management, parent education and guidance, family law and public policy, professional ethics and practice, and family life education methodology). Having the CFLE provides credibility of your knowledge in the field and brings new opportunities for networking. Please see the NCFR website for additional information.

Is there some kind of CFLE exam study group that I could join in Illinois?

Each year, we collect contact information from Illinois members who are in starting a study group for the CFLE exam, even if they have to study with someone via phone or the Internet. If you are interested in participating in a study group (in person, face to face, or via the Internet), please contact the current ILCFR president. If there is not currently anyone else who is interested in studying for the exam, he/she will keep your contact information and let you know when we hear from others who are going through the CFLE process and preparing for the exam. We are happy to connect our members in this way.
